Cash for Appliances Washington offers rebates on qualified ENERGY STAR® refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, heat pump water heaters, gas storage water heaters, gas tankless water heaters, and ductless air source heat pumps. The intent of the program is to take resource-wasting appliances off the grid, save consumers money by offering a cash back rebate and long-term savings on their monthly energy bill, and stimulate the Washington economy through the purchase of energy-efficient products at local retailers.

Purchases made outside of Washington State or online also require proof of paid Washington State sales tax.
Clothes Washers
$150 rebate on high-efficiency ENERGY STAR® clothes washers:
- Cash for Appliances Washington qualified ENERGY STAR® clothes washers have a Modified Energy Factor (MEF) of 2.46 or greater and a Water Factor (WF) of 4 or less. This is a high standard of energy-efficiency and not all ENERGY STAR® clothes washers meet this standard, so it is important to check carefully before you make your purchase.
- Purchased on or after March 15, 2010
- Consumers who have already received or applied for a $100 rebate prior to the incentive increase will automatically receive an additional $50. These additional checks will be processed in August and September. Please refrain from calling to check on the status of your additional incentive until late September. Please do not resubmit an application for the additional incentive.
- Qualified Products List for Clothes Washers (Models on all qualified products lists are subject to change. Visit www.energystar.gov for the latest information.)
Qualified clothes washers are available at many local retailers. Local purchases are encouraged, and if you do purchase online or out of state you must show proof of payment of Washington State sales tax, unless you have purchased the appliance at a Washington military exchange or from a Washington retailer and have a Native American exemption.
In addition to the rebates offered by Cash for Appliances Washington your purchase could also qualify for rebates from your local utility company, the retailer or the product manufacturer. This program does allow you to collect rebates from multiple sources for the same purchase. Check out other available rebates at www.washwiserebate.com or www.dsireusa.org or www.energystar.gov or by checking your local utility website.
Cash for Appliances Washington wants to get your inefficient clothes washer off the electrical grid. Although it may be tempting to give it to a friend or charity, that does not accomplish the desired goal of eliminating resource-wasting appliances. You are encouraged to recycle or decommission your old clothes washer. Many retailers will haul away your old washer at the time that they deliver your new one. They might do this for free, or there may be a small fee charged for the service. We encourage you to get that information from the retailer at the time of purchase. If no haul-away service is offered, you can find out about alternative options here.
Clothes washers that are more than 10 years old may add an extra $135 per year in utility costs to your bill compared to a new ENERGY STAR® qualified model. Replacing your inefficient model with a high-efficiency product helps save money and energy. In addition, it helps Washington State meet its objective to improve statewide per capita energy efficiency by 10% by 2012.
Refrigerators
$75 rebate on ENERGY STAR® refrigerators
- Cash for Appliances Washington qualified ENERGY STAR® refrigerators must be 9 cubic feet or greater. Some smaller ENERGY STAR® fridges (such as those for dorm rooms and small spaces) do not meet this requirement, so it is important to check carefully before you make your purchase.
- Must include proof (i.e. a separate haul-away receipt) for recycling or decommissioning
- Purchased on or after March 15, 2010
- No change from initial launch.
- Qualified Products List for Refrigerators (Models on all qualified products lists are subject to change. Visit www.energystar.gov for the latest information.)
Qualified refrigerators are available at many local retailers. Cash for Appliances Washington requires proof of recycling or decommissioning of your inefficient fridge in order to be eligible for the refrigerator rebate. If you move the fridge to your garage or basement to keep it as a second fridge, or give it to a friend or charity, then you would not qualify for the rebate. Old refrigerators are such energy hogs that many utilities actually offer a rebate just for recycling your old one – and they provide a pick-up service. Check with your local utility to determine if a refrigerator recycling incentive is available. As an alternative, many retailers will haul away your old refrigerator at the time that they deliver your new one. They might do this for free, or there may be a small fee charged for the service. We encourage you to get that information from the retailer at the time of purchase.
If no haul-away service is offered, and your utility does not offer a refrigerator recycling program you may find out about alternative options here.
You must submit separate documentation from the purchase receipt as proof of refrigerator recycling or decommissioning with your rebate application. If your recycling provider does not have such documentation available you when they receive (pick up, take possession, haul away whatever words work) your old refrigerator may use this recycling receipt or have them sign off on the rebate application.
Pre-1993 refrigerators cost about $80 to run on average each year, compared to current ENERGY STAR® qualified models that cost as little as $30 annually (these figures are based an average-sized 1992 model versus a new ENERGY STAR® model). Cash for Appliances Washington is expected to result in approximately 15,000 energy-guzzling refrigerators being recycled and replaced by energy-efficient models.
Dishwashers
$75 rebate on ENERGY STAR® Dishwashers
- Cash for Appliances Washington qualified ENERGY STAR® dishwashers must use less than or equal to 307 kWh per year and less than or equal to 5 gallons per cycle. This is a high standard for dishwashers and not all ENERGY STAR® dishwashers meet this standard, so it is important to check carefully that your dishwasher meets these requirements before you make your purchase.
